Can’t stop dwelling on negative thoughts? Here’s a tip to help you stay positive in the New Year: To banish unwanted, negative thoughts, write them down, rip them up, and throw them into the trash. A new study in the journal Psychological Science has found that physically discarding our ideas can help us part with them emotionally. Called rumination, focusing on negative thoughts can weigh us down and even lead to depression. According to Jane Ehrman, MEd, a mind-body coach at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Integrative Medicine, we get what we expect. So when we hold on to negative beliefs, they become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You may not have control over the thoughts that come into your head, she says, but you can control how they affect you.
