What to Eat Right Now: Nectarines

It’s not surprising that “nectar” is the root of this sweet, delicious fruit’s name! The nectarine was originally cultivated in China. Similar in taste, nectarines are actually a kind of peach with a characteristic smooth skin.

Why They’re Good for You
Nectarines provide a variety of vitamins and minerals in a small package, with just over 60 calories in a medium nectarine. They are a good source of Vitamin C — an antioxidant vitamin needed for collagen production with impressive skin-related benefits. They also contain vitamin A, potassium, and niacin. If that’s not enough for you, consider this: Their high fiber-content will improve digestive health, cholesterol levels, and help with weight management.

Best Ways to Eat Them
Keep fresh nectarines in a paper bag until ripe, and then move them to the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. These rinse-and-go fruits make excellent snacks or an easy addition to a quick breakfast of 100 percent whole grain toast. They’re also terrific in smoothies, salsas and salads. If you’re feeling creative, sauté sliced nectarines or grill nectarine halves to bring out even more of their natural sugars. Then top with plain, non-fat greek yogurt and sliced almonds or pistachios for a tasty summer treat.

Slice, dice and blend them to perfection in these delicious combinations:
  • Almond butter + 100 percent whole grain toast
  • Spinach + avocado + walnuts
  • Oatmeal + pecans + cinnamon
