Avoid summer snack attacks! Make your nibbles nutritious and delicious.
Daily Dose
Potato chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, and the like are abundant year-round. But in the summer, when warm-weather gatherings and road trips abound, they can seem to spread like poison ivy. Make sure the salty, crunchy allure of packaged snacks doesn’t sabotage your intentions by following the Boy Scout motto: Be prepared! If you’re headed off to a barbeque or picnic, eat a nutritious snack before you leave so you don’t find yourself merging with the chips and dip. Setting off on a road trip? Roadside offerings are sure to be grim, so pack nutritious snacks for the car. If you’re looking for some good ideas, try organic turkey or chicken jerky products, suggests Cleveland Clinic nutritionist Amy Gannon, RD. “They’re a great, protein-rich snack that doesn’t require refrigeration,” she says. Individual packs of guacamole, hummus, nut butters, whole-grain crackers, and unsweetened applesauce are convenient and nutritious, as are sticks of carrots, celery, jicama, and other crunchy veggies. As for a sweet treat, keep on driving right past that soft-serve place and travel to the dark side instead…dark chocolate, that is! Add a dollop of peanut butter to a square or two of dark chocolate for a balanced snack that’s decadent and nourishing. Next stop: the beach!
