Take That, Icy Sidewalk! Yoga Poses for Balance
As you carefully shuffle your feet along the icy sidewalk or parking lot to get around this winter, it can be a challenge not to lose your balance and fall. Daily practice of these yoga poses, which promote balance, strength, and muscle memory, can greatly improve your chances of staying upright.

Daily Dose
Stork Pose: Stand tall with crown of the head pointing toward ceiling, shoulders aligned over hips and hips aligned over feet. Inhale through the nose as you raise the arms overhead. Exhale and lower arms to place hands on hips. If you desire support, lower hands to the back of a chair, standing sideways and holding chair with left hand. Raise the right foot off the ground as you bend the knee to hip height. Hold for 3-5 breaths. Repeat on left side.

Daily Dose
Queen Mary Pose: Stand tall with crown of the head pointing toward ceiling, shoulders aligned over hips and hips aligned over feet. Inhale through the nose as you raise the arms overhead. Exhale and lower arms to shoulder height, out to the sides of the body. Open legs to wider stance, slightly more than hip distance apart. Lean to the right and pick up the left food from the ground, sending your center of gravity toward the right. Guide the left foot back to the floor, pick up the right foot and lean the body to the left. The idea is to list from side to side like the ship Queen Mary!
