Get up and go! Morning exercise may encourage weight loss.
Timing isn’t everything, but it’s something. Getting regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. And if you’re overweight, fitting in a walk or jog before breakfast might help to tip the scales in your favor (literally!). In a small new study, a group of overweight men did a 60-minute walking workout before eating any breakfast and then, on a different day, did the same workout after eating a carbohydrate-rich breakfast. Based on blood and tissue samples taken before and after the two workouts, researchers believe that stored fat was used to fuel the pre-breakfast workout, whereas the recently eaten carbs fueled the after-breakfast workout. This was a small study, but other research supports the notion that pre-breakfast exercise is especially beneficial for weight loss. To get into the morning-exercise habit, lay out your exercise clothes and shoes the night before (the more time you spend looking for your T-shirt and socks, the more likely you are to slide back into bed!). Or make a date with a friend — knowing a friend is waiting on the corner is sure to help you resist the snooze button. And if pre-breakfast exercise just doesn’t work for you, all is not lost, since exercise any time of day is fantastic for your health. The very best time? Whatever time you’ll “just do it.”
