PRO

  • 7-Keto DHEA, in conjunction with calorie restriction, boosts metabolism by increasing heat production, resulting in weight loss. This product is worth trying in conjunction with a calorie-restricted weight loss program.
  • 7-Keto DHEA, though a naturally occurring steroid, does not act as a steroid and is not converted into estrogens and androgens.
  • 7-Keto DHEA increases enzymes used in the cell’s mitochondria to generate energy.
  • A study of 7-keto DHEA in increasing doses in men showed no increase in testosterone, estradiol, cortisol, thyroxin or insulin levels.
  • No side effects were reported and the product was considered safe.

CON

  • Most of the studies on 7-Keto DHEA have been performed on animals; there is very little human data.
  • The human data that IS available shows an increase in resting metabolic rate over a short period of time, but how this translates to sustained resting metabolic rate, and more importantly, ultimate weight loss, has not been shown.
  • More robust, long-term human trials that show significant weight loss would be required before we would recommend this supplement.
  • The only available study happens to have been supported by the very company that produces the product. This poses a potential conflict of interest regarding the source of research funding.

* *ADVISORY* *
No data exist for pregnancy, lactation, or use in children. We recommend that these groups refrain from using 7-Keto DHEA.

DOSAGE: Take 100 mg twice daily while dieting.

CONCLUSION: We conclude that while 7-Keto DHEA shows promise as an adjunct to weight loss by improving metabolism while dieting, there is not enough conclusive evidence for us to recommend this product. If you do elect to try it, please discuss your decision with your doctor, and observe carefully for any changes in your health.
